Petra Jordan

My first exposure to Petra Jordan

It all started with the Indiana Jones movie,

The Last Crusade

I was sitting in the movie theater watching the movie, then they did it, they got to this amazing place carved in stone. I literally sat up in my seat looking at it thinking, I have got to go there.

My big costly mistake.

The following year, I headed to see Petra  Jordan.  I got there not even knowing how to go to Petra once I arrive, it’s not like I could google it. Internet didn’t exist. All I could find was a book about Jordan, and there was a section about Petra.

Luckily, Jordan was a friendly place to visitors, people were willing to help and English speakers were plentiful.

I headed out to Petra on a bus that takes you from Amman all the way to Petra entrance. I could not contain my excitement as I was going through the “Siq” and getting to the end of it were I saw the Treasury (The part you see in the movie), first mistake. There’s so much along the way that I missed. I stood there frozen like one of the stones staring at it, I obviously remembered to breath since I am still alive today.

I walked inside and around the place, I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss a thing. There’s no telling if or when I would have a chance to see Petra again. I got to see a theater carved in stone, saw caves and dwellings also carved in stone, saw structure carved with such precision that is difficult to achieve even with today’s technology. It was simply AMAZING. I was happy, it was definitely worth the trip.

My BIG mistake is that once I got past the structure, I thought that I saw Petra and headed back to see the things I saw again. I learned many years later that I have only seen a fraction of what Petra had to offer, from sights, structures and experiences. I was so close, no I was closer than close, I was there. How could I have missed all of this. I felt cheated (by me). I was in a buffet of wonders and barely scratched the surface. There are places that I have passed on my way to the Siq without seeing them, all I had to do is get off the beaten path just a little bit.

The Plan

I set a goal to see Petra again, I had to. It was the only way to get over the feeling of losing an opportunity. It was 18 years later, 2008 when I finally got my chance. I am going to Jordan, I am going to really see Petra. This time, I am going prepared.

I spent no less than 100 hours researching Petra, Jordan. I managed to get in contact with people in Jordan who got me in touch with people who happened to be tour guides who specialize in Petra. They were more than gracious to share information, tips and things to see. When I told them that I have been to Petra before and what I saw, one of them actually said to me that I haven’t really seen Petra yet. Sure, add insult to injury.

My real visit to Petra Jordan

I get to Jordan with an arsenal of information, I knew what I wanted to see, I knew exactly what I was going to do, or so I thought. Don’t get me wrong, this trip was much more productive, but if it wasn’t for my contacts in Jordan, I still would have missed much. You see, Petra is not only about what to see, it is also about what to do. I did it all, it was amazing, it was the best trip of my life and I cannot wait to go again. I still call my contacts in Jordan or email them on regular basis.

Flash of genius

One day while looking through my photos, it hit me. I spent countless hours getting the information I need, I made many notes while on my trip, not just about Petra, but about Jordan, how to get there, how to travel while in Jordan, what to do and not to do, what to take with you on the Petra trip, what else to see besides Petra. I thought, why not get all this information together and offer it to people who are considering taking the voyage. I know it would have helped me on my first trip, I know it would have saved me hundreds of dollars had I known what I know now. I know it would have saved me from the feeling of  standing in an airport in an unfamiliar land and not knowing what to do next. It would have made a huge difference. I would have enjoyed my trip more.

I had no doubt in my mind that Petra will be voted one of the new 7 wonders of the world, if you see it, you’ll know why.

So here it is.

Everything you need to Know for your Dream Vacation to Petra Jordan Where to stay, what to See, how to get there…

Petra Jordan

Are you thinking about taking the trip of a lifetime to Petra? The breath taking sight as you walk through the narrow path “siq” is indescribable, the moment that path clears as if it is opening its doors to see the famous Treasury is a moment you will remember for years to come. I still remember my first time back in 1990 as if it was yesterday.

Petra Jordan

The Treasury is the first structure you see at the end of the "Siq"

Most people are so anxious to see the Treasury that they miss a great many attractions along the way. This guide will take you from the pre-trip stage – planning all the sights that you want to see while in Petra – Jordan, what you need, what you should take with you, what to do, what to see, how to make the most out of your trip, plus tips that will save hundreds of dollars while you are there.

I was there the first time in 1990, traveling without a guide or information, then finding out about all that I missed after I came back to the US, it was too late. I had the good fortune to go back there again in 2008, imaging that for 18 years I was hoping to go there again and make up for all that I missed. This time, I spent a month in Jordan, did my homework before I went and more research while over there. I didn’t want to go to Petra blind like the first time, I waited until I had gathered information so valuable, that made my trip more memorable than the first time. I met with seasoned guides that became my friends and I keep in touch with them on regular basis. To this day, Petra remains one of my favorite destinations.

One of my best trips to anywhere was my trip to Petra in 2008, I knew how to travel to Petra.

No matter how much you read about Petra, or how many pictures you see, there is absolutely no comparison to being there. Standing next to the columns that were carved, not built, seeing how magnificent they are is something that cannot be captured in a photo.
